E informed me on Sunday night, as we were settling in for the night, that "oh, hey mom...my cell phone is broken." So, like a good mom, I checked the phone and sure enough the charger part, that isn't supposed to come off, was lodged into the charger port on her phone, GREAT. So, again like a good mom, we pulled up Verizon's web site, found out her phone was available for an upgrade, and perused the cell phone options she could replace her now broken phone with.
SIDEBAR: Did you know that 99% of the cell phones available now REQUIRE some sort of data package add on?? Well, they do and the cheapest one available to add on is $9.99. WHAT?? Have you seen my cell phone bill?? I will not be adding another $9.99 to my cell phone bill...Sorry E. I proceeded to tell her that maybe the store would have more options without the REQUIRED data package add on....yeah right.
So, last night (after driving home from Des Moines) we loaded back up in to the car and I drove BACK to Des Moines to get her a new phone, of course AFTER making sure she brought her money because I would not be buying her another phone (good mom again). We get to the store I hate more than anything in the world and got helped right away. Following is the conversation between me, E, the sales guy and a little A mixed in...I love my life.
Sales guy: Hi, how can I help you?
Me: My daughter's phone is broken, something with the charger breaking off in the charging port on her phone.
Sales guy: I see that, what did you have in mind.
Me: Well, genius, we need to replace this phone with a new phone that doesn't require a data package.
Sales guy: (walking us AWAY from the million other cell phones and stopping in front of a half wall with 3 choices) These are your choices.
E: THAT'S IT??? OMGosh.
Me: These are your options, pick one.
E: (crying now) I don't like any of them.
Me: Ok, I'll cancel your line right now (good mom again). Your phone is BRO-KEN and I don't care what it looks like, the new one will work and I can get a hold of you, WHICH IS THE WHOLE POINT HERE. (We leave the store)
E: I don't like any of them mom, I really don't. And when A has her birthday she's gonna upgrade her phone and get the same one that I have because there are ONLY THREE choices.
A: I'll get a different color so it's not the same, I don't see what the big deal is anyway, our cousins have the same phone and it doesn't bug them. I don't get you. (A walks off disgusted)
Me: These are your choices; #1 get one of those phones in there and like it or #2 I cancel your line and you don't have a phone.
E: Fine. (Walks back in to the store)
Sales guy: So, did we make a decision?
E: (With tears in her eyes) Nods head and points at the one she 'wants'.
Sales guy: (Who is terrified at the crying and the shitty look on my face) Do you want to see it in red, cause I can totally go get it for you.
E: Nods head yes.
Me: For the love E, pull it together, it's just a phone that does EVERYTHING your other phone does. It's not for fashion (OMG, I just sounded like my mother).
Sales guy: Here's the red one.
E: Ok, (sigh) I'll take that one.
Me: Thank god...
A: I'm hungry, what are we doing after this??
This is just a glimpse of a 'normal' night in our world....no wonder I can't convince anyone that they REALLY DO want to hang out in it with us. WE ARE A NUTTY BUNCH :)
Thanks for checking in....
L
UPDATE: E told me this morning that she really likes her new phone...that is so weird I say back to her...Nutty.
