Flygstad Bake Day

Last Saturday was the annual Flygstad bake day. I say annual like I've been there every year since JY and I got married 14 years ago - but I haven't. It happens, none the less, every year if I'm there or not. I've been to more than 2 and less then 5 probably, which I'm gonna work on going forward, promise!!

So, the start time is 1030a at Cousin Amy's house, in Jewell. The plan was for the girls and I to leave the house at 9a, good plan but it didn't happen. We left the house at 925a heading north and got just passed the Bev exit and JY's car flips it's gas light on...neat. So, I push it to DSM and coast into Hy-Vee on fumes. Filled 'er up, went in and bought coleslaw to share for lunch, hit Starbucks (duh), went across the street for McDonald's (good mom) and we're on the road again at 1010a. Yeah, we aren't gonna make it on time. Good thing I warned Deb (JY's mom) before we left the house that we would be a little late. So, I'm thinking, how do I get to Jewell...and if JY was in the car he'd say 'if you didn't have your face stuck in a book every time we went somewhere you'd know where you were going' and I'd say something not nice and we'd drive in silence...but JY wasn't with us so I'm thinking, I drive to Stanhope (because I know where that is) and I know there is a sign for Jewell just before I turn the other direction to go to JY's mom's house so that's the direction I head. I'm 10 miles from Jewell at 1105a and I call Amy. Hey Amy, I know I've been to your house before, but I can't remember how to get there...weird I know. So, I know where I'm going and we finally show up at 1120a. WAHOO!!

I help Deb with her peanut clusters, watched Grandma Lois make microwave peanut brittle (I might have stirred a couple of times, I didn't just watch) and then we sit down for lunch. After lunch, Grandma Lois announces that this year, she's going to watch the rest of us make the most important treat that we have at our Flygstad Christmas - Lefsa. Again, I watch as Deb mixes and folds and helps the great grandchildren roll the dough. I, of course, took many pictures of this :) Grandma Lois says that our (term used loosely for me) Lefsa is pretty good, we clean up the kitchen and call it a day. At 330p the girls and I hop back in the car and head south for home.

It was such a great day to spend time with so much family!! I needed that, thanks :)

Luv to you all,

L
